Brazil deputy, Greenwald’s husband, reports death threats

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazilian lawmaker David Miranda says he is receiving death threats after his husband, journalist Glenn Greenwald, published stories involving a top member of the government of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.

Miranda said Monday he reported the death threats against him and his family to federal police last week.

He said in a note that he also suffered death threats in March, soon after he replaced Jean Wyllys, Brazil’s first openly gay federal deputy. Wyllys stepped down due to homophobic death threats and left the country.

The threats come after Greenwald sent shockwaves through Brazilian politics when his news website published text messages apparently showing the current Justice Minister and then-judge Sergio Moro improperly orienting prosecutors in a criminal case against ex-President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
