New dock aims to make Shubie Park waterway more accessible

A new addition coming to Shubie Park aims to make the waterway more accessible.

The Shubenacadie Canal Commission will be adding an EZ Dock this summer.

“You put a kayak or a canoe inside it,” says the commission's executive director, Claire Halpern. “It allows the boat to be stabilized and for people … to enter into the boat safely without any fear of it tipping.

She tells NEWS 95.7's The Sheldon MacLeod Show this will be ideal for young kids, those with limited mobility, or those just not confident in their balance.

“Often the hardest part of kayaking or canoeing is getting in or out, that's when the boat tips most often, so we're trying to eliminate that,” she explains.

Halpern hopes this will make the waterway more accessible for everyone.

The official announcement of the EZ Dock goes Tuesday morning at the park's Fairbanks Centre and the commission hopes it will be up and running by early July.

Those who don't have their own canoe or kayak can rent them on site.
