Stopover Halifax program encourages layover passengers to stick around for a while

In the past year, Halifax Stanfield International Airport has seen an 20 per cent increase in the number of international travellers, and now an effort is being made to encourage those passing through our region to stick around for a while.

Halifax has become Canada's newest stopover destination.

Those flying on WestJet from 10 North American destinations through Halifax, to go to Dublin, London Gatwick, Glasgow and Paris can now build in a layover of up to 7 days at no extra charge.

“We certainly think Halifax is going to be one of the best destinations for people who are planning a trip between Canada and Europe, and also for those European travellers coming in, to see and get a taste of Canada, East Coast style,” says airport authority spokesperson Tiffany Chase.

Discover Halifax has launched a new website, explaining the program and suggesting potential itineraries which focus on different experiences, including history, entertainment, food, and family-friendly.

They've also partnered with Ambassatours, Avis car rental and the Alt Hotel to arrange some discounts for stopover tourists.

Chase tells NEWS 95.7's The Sheldon MacLeod Show the Stopover Halifax program is being promoted in WestJet's inflight magazine this month.

“This really is sort of the initial pilot-year where we're just launching it. Of course the season is already underway,” she explains.

“Next year, we'll be starting the awareness level of this much earlier in the year, so when people are planning and booking their summer travel in particular, they'll already be aware of it and be able to book their stopover in advance.”

Chase hopes other airlines will soon join WestJet in participating in Stopover Halifax.
