Trump portrait adorns Colorado Capitol after Putin prank

DENVER — President Donald Trump finally joined the Colorado Capitol’s wall of presidential portraits on Thursday, a year after a prankster placed a picture of Russian President Vladimir Putin near the spot intended for Trump.

Colorado Republicans raised more than $10,000 through a GoFundMe account in 2018 to commission the portrait, which was painted by Sarah Boardman, an artist who also produced the Capitol’s portrait of President Barack Obama.

“Regardless of your personal feelings for the President, ensuring that our Hall of Presidential Portraits is complete is vital for the preservation of our nation’s — and our state’s — history,” then-Senate President Kevin Grantham stated in launching the fundraising appeal.

Republicans Grantham, Sen. John Cooke and Rep. Kevin Van Winkle and former Democratic Rep. Dan Pabon attended Thursday’s unveiling in the Capitol’s third floor rotunda.

An aide to then-House Speaker Crisanta Duran, a Democrat, was punished last year for helping a progressive group put the picture of Putin on brief display.

Katie March used her security badge to allow a member of ProgressNow Colorado into the capitol with the picture of Putin, KUSA-TV reported . A tour guide removed it.
