Around 125 tenants on Micmac Boulevard will soon find themselves living on United Avenue.
That's because the Halifax Regional Municipality is taking steps to change the name of a confusing roadway in Dartmouth to help with emergency services, and deliveries.
“In the municipality, based on our civic address rules, we can't have a lane or a driveway that has three or more structures or facilities on it, and have it continue to have the same name as the road that it intersects with,” explains municipality spokesperson Brendan Elliott.
Those heading to Mic Mac Mall will still drive down Micmac Boulevard to get there. Elliott says it's a laneway off that street going through the six apartment buildings that make up the Kings Arms complex that will be getting a new name.
“We need to rename those streets because it makes it easier for 911, for Canada Post, [and] other delivery services to get down there, and realize where they're actually going,” says Elliott. “If you don't know the area, you could drive right by this laneway and not realize.”
He says the change has been in the works since November of 2017.
“This is a quite common thing for us to do,” he says. “We do 10 to 20 new private lane names a year. This just happened to be on the list and it's up for a change this year.”
Elliott says the new name will reflect the history of the location, that of the first African – Nova Scotian Baptist Church in Dartmouth founded in 1844. The area was locally known as 'The Avenue.' The descendants of original settlers were contacted and they helped decide on the new name.
To account for the inconvenience of having their civic address changed, HRM will cover the cost of a year of mail redirection.
The new name is scheduled to officially kick in at the end of September.
