Hawaii buildings nominated to national historic register

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii — Two Hawaii properties have been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places.

West Hawaii Today reported Monday that the National Park Service is considering adding the Matsujiro Fujino and Honokaa Garage properties.

Both properties are located on the main street of Honokaa on the Big Island.

Officials say the service is seeking public comment on the historical significance of the properties by Aug. 14.

The National Register of Historic Places established in 1966 is the official list of U.S. historic buildings, districts, sites, structures, and objects rated worthy of preservation.

The Matsujiro Fujino property was the site of the M. Fujino Store, a commercial enterprise and family residence constructed in 1925.

The Honokaa Garage dates to 1912-14 and served for decades as a garage and gas station.
