Viola Desmond painting among new murals to be added to Mulgrave Park

Mulgrave Park is quickly becoming an outdoor gallery as artists arrive throughout the week to paint more murals on the neighbourhood's buildings.

The third year of the community's Paint the Park project will see around a dozen more works of art added to the public housing development's collection.

“Right now we already have 13 pieces in the community … but the pieces that are going up today and into the weekend vary from portraits of Portia White and Canadian activist Viola Desmond to a Bluenose II mural,” said organizer Jeremy Williams. “That's all I can give to you now, I don't want to give everything away.”

Mulgrave Park's first mural was a tribute to former Halifax Rainmen basketball player Tyler Richards.

“A friend who passed away who was a great role model in our community and a great community leader,” Williams explained. “In the midst of doing that, the team that helped put it together felt the need to do another one just for fun.”

“When they did it, it kind of sparked this attraction by the community members, especially the kids, to art.”

He believes the murals beautify the space and create a better area for neighbourhood children to play.

Saturday, Mulgrave Park will host a free BBQ from noon to 4 p.m. when the community will be able to come out and watch some of the artists work.
