Nova Scotia Health Authority announces new president and CEO

The Nova Scotia Health Authority will soon have a new president and CEO.

The health authority and its board of directors has announced Dr. Brendan Carr will take over the position on December 16.

Dr. Carr has spent much of his medical and leadership career in Nova Scotia, both in the emergency department and as a family physician.

He also served as vice-president of medicine with the former Capital District Health Authority in Halifax.

From 2007 to 2012, he was an assistant professor in the department of emergency medicine at Dalhousie University. He then headed to British Columbia to pursue a career opportunity.

“My experiences have prepared me well for this role,” Dr. Carr said in a news release. “I've learned firsthand about the benefits of system integration, effective partnerships, as well as the critical importance of leadership in a large geographically distributed health system.”

“Nova Scotia Health Authority is at a critical point in its evolution. I consider it a privilege to be taking on this role and am looking forward to returning to the province I call home.”

Board chair Frank van Schaayk described Dr. Carr as an innovated leader.

“He has the right balance of experience, knowledge and expertise both in health care, as well as in running a large organization,” van Schaayk said. “We are confident we have identified the right leader to take NSHA into the future.”

Janet Davison will continue on as interim president and CEO until Dr. Carr takes over near the end of the year.
