Dalhousie building shut down after two chemicals introduced to water supply (update)

Dalhousie University says the Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences Building is closed until further notice.

A release says there was an issue with the building's heating system at around 8 a.m., which resulted in two chemicals being introduced to the water supply.

The issue was discovered when people noticed discoloured water in the building.

Dalhousie says the toxicity level of the chemicals is low, so there's not much risk to those who may have washed their hands or used the bathroom.

However, anyone who consumed drinking water in the building between 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31 is asked to contact the Health Services clinic at 902-494-2171 or head to the 2nd Floor of LeMarchant Place at 1246 LeMarchant Street.

“The water would likely have had a bad smell or taste to it,” Dalhousie says. “If you took water with you in a bottle, discard the remaining water and wash the bottle several times with warm water and soap. If the bottle continues to have an odour, please discard.”

Crews are now fully flushing and testing the building's water supply.

The Marion McCain building is expected to stay closed at least through Monday, November 4.

Students should expect updates from their instructors on the status of their classes.
