Bedford getting a new high school

By Matthew Moore

The province's Education Department has announced it's building a new high school in an area of Halifax Regional Municipality experiencing an influx of families.

Bedford Ravine High School will be located off Larry Uteck Boulevard on the same property as the previously announced pre-primary to Grade 8 facility on Broad Street.

Education Minister Zach Churchill says the building will be able to accommodate 1,200 students.

“Anybody who is living in the community … knows that the population is expanding pretty rapidly here,” he says. “There's a lot of development, a lot of new families moving in and this is where the greatest population pressure is that we need to respond to.”

Regional executive director for the Halifax Regional Centre for Education, Elwin LeRoux, welcomes the news.

“Our community is growing, with almost 1,500 more students in the last year alone,” he says. “We are excited to see this new school in the fast-growing areas from Bedford Ravines to Clayton Park.”

Bedford Ravine High School is expected to open in 2023.
