Halifax is under a snowfall warning as a snowstorm bears down on the province Wednesday morning.
The storm forcing a number of closures and cancellations.
SCHOOLS:
All schools are closed in the Halifax Regional Centre for Education today.
Dalhousie University, the University of King's College, Mount Saint Vincent University, Saint Mary's University and NSCAD are closed today.
Metro NSCC campuses are closed for the day.
All CSAP schools are closed for the day.
Halifax Christian Academy's Armdale Campus and the early childhood centre in Tmberlea are closed.
The Atlantic School of Theology is closed.
Halifax Grammar school is closed.
Schools are also closed in the Chignecto Central, South Shore, Cape Breton – Victoria, Tri-County, Strait and Annapolis Valley Regional Centres for Education.
TRANSPORTATION:
Halifax Regional Municipality will be enforcing the winter parking ban overnight into Thursday. Any vehicles left parked on city streets between 1 and 6 a.m. risk being ticketed or towed. In addition to the overnight ban, vehicles can be ticketed or towed at any time of day or night if they get in the way of snow clearing operations under the province's Motor Vehicle Act.
Lots of delays and cancellations at the Halifax airport. Check ahead if heading to the airport today.
Some Halifax Transit routes are on snow plans. Expect delays.
Maritimes Bus routes 906 and 907 from Lunenburg County to Halifax have been cancelled today. Several other routes are also not running.
BUSINESSES:
The NSLC will open our stores in the Halifax Regional Municipality at 3 p.m.
The Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market is closed Wednesday
Irving Shipbuilding’s Halifax Shipyard, Marine Fabricators & Woodside Industries will have a partial closure today (January 8) with all production activities stopped until midnight tonight.
Halifax Shopping Centre, Mic Mac Mall and Sunnyside Mall are open for the day, but it's recommended you call ahead as individual stores may delay opening.
All branches of East Coast Credit Union will be closed today
Several other businesses may be delayed in opening or stay closed all day, it's best to call ahead.
SERVICES:
Access Nova Scotia centres in Sackville, Dartmouth and Halifax will close at 4:30 p.m.
Canada Post has stopped delivering mail in the Halifax area, including Dartmouth. Delivery will resume when it's safe to do so.
Night Court in Halifax is cancelled. All Motor Vehicle Act, parking ticket and Small Claims Court matters will be rescheduled.
There will be no curbside collection of garbage, organics, and recyclables on Wednesday. If that's your day, you will be able to put out double the amount of stuff on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
There will also be no curbside collection in the Municipality of East Hants. It's been rescheduled for Monday, January 13, 2020. This affects residents in area 2 which includes parts of Mount Uniacke and South Rawdon.
All branches and departments of Halifax Public Libraries will remain closed for the day.
ISANS is closed January 8th due to stormy weather. All programs and services are cancelled.
Worker's Compensation Board offices in Halifax are closed for the day.
Avalon Centre is closed due to weather conditions.
Due to inclement weather, all Canadian Red Cross offices in Nova Scotia will remain closed today.
Nova Scotia Works – Opportunity Place will be closed for the day
RECREATION:
The Emera Oval is cancelling public skates, including the one scheduled at 6:30 p.m.
Many recreation centres will be closed for the remainder of the day.
The Discovery Centre will be closed for the full day and evening.
The Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame is closed due to weather.
Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 is closed.
The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia will be closed today.
The Museum of Natural History is closed for the day.
EVENTS:
Neptune Theatre's 2 p.m. matinée performance of Peter Pan has been cancelled
The North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) official volunteer launch has been postponed
GOVERNMENT:
Stadacona, HMC Dockyard, Windsor Park, Willow Park and Shearwater are closed due to winter weather conditions.
The U.S. Consulate office in Halifax is closed.
The standing committee on public accounts in the legislative chamber of Province House has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Jan. 29.
HRM's Special Events Advisory Committee has been postponed to Monday, January 20, 2020 at 9 a.m.
