Newfoundland and Labrador, Ottawa agree to protect boreal caribou herds

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — Ottawa and Newfoundland and Labrador have reached an agreement to collaborate on protecting boreal caribou in Labrador.
The provincial government announced the agreement last week that will see Ottawa contribute $5.4 million towards efforts to preserve the dwindling sedentary herds.
The agreement will guide the conservation plan, to be implemented over four years, for Labrador’s Lac Joseph, Red Wine Mountain and Mealy Mountains herds.
The species is considered threatened under the federal Species at Risk Act.
The two governments have agreed to collaborate with Indigenous governments to develop the conservation measures and incorporate Indigenous knowledge into the plan.
The agreement discusses habitat conservation measures and improving knowledge by using collars on some animals and conducting surveys five times a year that will involve representatives from Indigenous communities.
