Mayor takes 20 per cent pay cut during pandemic

By CityNews Halifax Staff

Halifax's mayor is taking a pay cut as the municipality continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of April 1, Mike Savage says his salary is 20 per cent lower that will continue until the financial pressure eases.

He told NEWS 95.7's The Rick Howe Show he's not challenging anyone else to follow his lead.

“I recognize I make more money than councillors do, I don't want to put pressure on other people. People know their own circumstances,” Savage said. “For me it wasn't a political thing, it was a personal thing and I felt it was appropriate.”

“A lot of people are feeling a bit of a pinch and I thought I could do the same,” he added.

Savage told councillors about it on a call yesterday and didn't plan to mention it to anyone else, but the mayor says Howe asked him if he was considering a cut in pay so he answered the question.

Other leaders around the world have recently announced similar cuts to their salaries.
