Volunteers wanted to help out at COVID vaccination clinics

By Meghan Groff

The province is looking for volunteers to help out at COVID-19 immunization clinics.

At a Tuesday briefing, the Nova Scotia's chief medical officer of health said, in the months ahead, many people will be needed for the most complex health care initiative ever rolled out in our province, and there are positions that won't require a medical background.

“Whether it's managing the registration of people or helping people while they're waiting the mandatory time period after vaccination,” Dr. Robert Strang explained.

“We're building on this based on our experience with pop-up [testing] clinics. There was a significant buy-in from communities putting their hand up and saying we want to come and help out in some way.”

Those who are and who are not health care professionals can apply through the Nova Scotia Health website.

“I really think that many Nova Scotians would be more than willing to come forward and say I'm prepared to volunteer my time to help support and run a COVID immunization clinic in my community, because by doing that they're contributing to the collective safety in that community,” said Strang.

In addition, he said the Nova Scotia College of Nursing is issuing conditional licences to retired nurses at no fee to help with immunizations.

According to Strang, over a 6 day period, 125 quickly took advantage of the offer.
