Lifeguards return to provincial beaches on July 1

By Meghan Groff

Lifeguards will be returning to provincial beaches next week.

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service will have 82 lifeguards supervising 25 beaches in 12 counties, including Clam Harbour, Dollar Lake, Lawrencetown, Martinique, Queensland and Rainbow Haven.

Staff will also be testing water quality.

“We are hoping for another safe season but are preparing staff for any incident that could occur,” said the service's director Paul D'Eon. “We urge beachgoers to swim in the supervised areas, between the red and yellow flags.”

Department of Lands and Forestry says they'll be on duty daily between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. throughout July and August, except for Mavillette and Clam Harbour beaches which are only supervised on weekends until Aug. 29.

Last summer, more than 300,000 people visited the beaches and more than 100 rescues took place.
