New all-weather sports fields in Dartmouth almost ready for action

New all-weather sports fields adjacent to the RBC Centre in Dartmouth should be ready for use next month.

City hall spokesperson Brynn Budden said Friday the two-field project is expected to be completed in mid-September.

After the installation is finished, the artificial turf fields will be used for football, soccer, rugby and lacrosse, she said.

The previous playing surfaces were constructed in 2006, says a municipal staff report presented to Halifax council in May.

Cost of the project is a little more than $2.6 million, Budden told HalifaxToday.ca via email. The replacement job was the subject of a public tender, the staff report says.

Budden said council approved the project as part of Halifax Regional Municipality’s 2021-22 capital budget.

She said the life span of the two surfaces, made of “fiber infilled with recycled crumb rubber, new crumb rubber and sand,” is 15 to 20 years. The staff report says the project’s other components include fence repairs, new score clocks and new accessible bleachers.

The fields are situated in Dartmouth’s Burnside business park, on the corner of Commodore Drive and John Savage Avenue, not far from the Dartmouth Crossing retail district.

Listed in the 2021-22 budget at more than $3 million, the balance of the project’s funds “will be used to implement the remaining park recapitalization (work) approved by council,” the staff report says.
