Environment Canada has released a special weather statement indicating that the Halifax area is set to see heavy rainfall this week.
Starting Monday morning and continuing into midweek, there will be between 50 to 100 mm of rain, possibly rising to 150 mm.
The weather statement is also in effect for the rest of mainland Nova Scotia.
“An intense low pressure system will approach from the southwest tonight and slowly cross the province on Monday before stalling over eastern Nova Scotia Tuesday night,” a news release says. “Heavy rain associated with this system will begin Monday morning in southwestern Nova Scotia and spread to the eastern parts of the province by Monday night.”
Total rainfall will be heaviest in eastern Nova Scotia where amounts of 100 to 150 mm are possible by Tuesday afternoon.
The rain should taper off in the western parts of the province on Tuesday, but periods of rain could still be seen later in the week.
“Strong gusting southeasterly winds are also expected ahead of the low beginning on Monday,” the news release says.
Environment Canada says to avoid washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
“Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada,” a news release says. “To report severe weather, send an email to NSstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #NSStorm.”
