Halifax to spend additional $1.2 million on modular housing units

Halifax councillors have unanimously agreed to pay an additional $1.2 million for modular housing units for people experiencing homelessness.
The decision increases the budget for the units from $3.7 million to $4.9 million.
Despite the unanimous approval, some councillors, including Tony Mancini, raised concerns that the municipality continues to foot the construction bill for the units when housing is a provincial responsibility.
The province is expected to fund wraparound services for those using the units.
The modular units being set up in Dartmouth were expected to be completed Tuesday and perhaps be ready for occupancy by the weekend.
Units in Halifax are not likely to be ready to be lived in until March, the municipality said this week.
