On July 9, Nova Scotia's Liberal party will hold a leadership convention to announce its next leader.
The new leader will replace Iain Rankin who was appointed the 29th premier of Nova Scotia in February 2021 but announced his resignation this January.
Candidates will have until March 21 to register while the membership cut-off date is June 9.
Candidates will also have to pay a $25,000 registration fee that can be made in three installments.
An additional $5,000 compliance deposit is also required that's refundable upon candidates meeting reporting and rules guidelines.
The Nova Scotia Liberal Party's Provincial Board met on Sunday to make decisions governing the party's 2022 leadership race.
The Provincial Board appointed the following members to the Leadership Organizing Committee:
- Kelly Regan as co-chair
- Dr. John Gillis as co-chair
- Jane O’Neill as chief electoral officer
- Brian MacLellan as chief financial officer and deputy chief electoral officer
“The Board sought to create a fair and equitable leadership contest,” party president Joseph Khoury says in a news release. “We look forward to our leadership candidates engaging Liberals in a robust conversation about the future of Nova Scotia.”
Due to COVID-19, the election will be conducted via electronic and phone voting.
“The vote will be by preferential ballot using the Weighted, One Member One Vote model,” the news release says.
The Leadership Organizing Committee will release the complete Rules of Procedure on Feb. 14.
