Acadia University cancels classes amid faculty strike

Classes are cancelled until further notice at one Nova Scotia university amid a faculty strike. 

Acadia University says efforts to reach a deal between the administration and faculty association have been unsuccessful and members are in a legal strike position as of Tuesday. 

“We are deeply troubled that this situation impacts students,” says Dr. Dale Keefe, Provost and Vice-President, Academic, and spokesperson for the University bargaining team in a statement. “While there is currently disagreement on what the final collective agreement contains, both parties – the Faculty Association and University Administration – ultimately want the best for our students.”

According to the university, a conciliator was brought in but declared an impasse and a “two-week cooling off period” on Jan. 14. Talks resumed on Jan. 26 and the statement says as of late Monday talks were ongoing through the conciliator.
