Nova Scotia Power activates Emergency Operations Centre

By Meghan Groff

With a storm on the way, Nova Scotia Power has activated its Emergency Operations Centre.

It will provide a central place to coordinate planning for outage restoration and response.

Halifax is currently under rain, wind and flash freeze warnings and blustery conditions are already here.

“We are activating our Emergency Operations Centre and positioning our team across the province, so we are ready to respond as safely and quickly as possible,” said the utility's storm lead, Sean Borden.

“It has been a busy winter storm season. We are preparing for our seventh storm in as many weeks,” he added.

Gusts in the Halifax area are expected to reach 90 km/h, which Nova Scotia Power says can start taking whole trees down.

Some exposed areas could see wind gusts approach 110 km/h.

“High winds can slow restoration efforts as crews stand down when winds reach 80km/hour until it is safe to go back up in the buckets,” NSP cautioned.

Icy roads could also slow down crews trying to reach affected areas.

The utility said it's a good idea to prepare for a storm by having an emergency kit with flashlights, a battery-powered radio and fresh water.
