$3-million from province to help Banook Canoe Club upgrade infrastructure
The Banook Canoe Club is among a handful of organizations benefitting from a total $10.1 million provincial investment in sport and recreation.
The club — founded in 1903 and approaching its 120th anniversary — will be getting a $3-million to make significant upgrades to its infrastructure, helping it continue to attract major events.
“We are excited that this investment from the Province of Nova Scotia will enable Banook Canoe Club to be more accessible, safer, functional and will help to ensure that it will be available to the community for another 120 years,” said the president of the club's board, Kim Gaudet, in a news release.

In addition, Canoe '22 Society is getting $1.5-million to upgrade the finish line tower at Lake Banook.
The facility will be hosting the ICF Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Championships this August and will be a venue when the North American Indigenous Games comes to Halifax next year.
Sport Nova Scotia — which is made up of over 50 provincial sport organizations representing more than 160,000 members — is getting $5-million for accessible equipment and programs for athletes with disabilities. The money will also allow the organization to help more children and youth facing financial barriers take part in sport and recreation.
“We are extremely grateful for this generous funding and excited for the important work it will allow us to continue to do through programs like KidSport as well as for programs for Nova Scotians with physical disabilities and other equity-deserving groups,” said CEO Jamie Ferguson.
“We understand the important physical, mental and social development benefits of sports, especially for our children. It is phenomenal that we will be able to help more Nova Scotians benefit from having sports as part of their lives.”
