RCMP take lead in missing girl investigation in northern New Brunswick

By Canadian Press

FREDERICTON — The RCMP announced Tuesday they have taken over as the lead police force investigating the suspected homicide of a young girl in northern New Brunswick almost a year ago.

Police say 14-year-old Madison Roy-Boudreau was last seen getting into a grey Ford Ranger at around 7:30 a.m. on May 11, 2021, in Bathurst, N.B.

Bathurst police and the RCMP have conducted numerous searches but never found Madison, and on Aug. 11, 2021, investigators ruled the disappearance a homicide.

RCMP Cpl. Hans Ouellette said he can’t get into specifics of the investigation, but police believe the girl was in the Middle River area after she was last seen in Bathurst, which would place her in RCMP jurisdiction.

Middle River is about 10 kilometres west of the city, and police have conducted a number of searches in the area over the past year.

“The specialized policing services we’ve used in the past to help the Bathurst Police Department have included our air services unit, our dog unit, our underwater recovery team and also the tactical support group ground search team,” Ouellette said in an interview.

“People in the Middle River and surrounding Bathurst region may also see some of those teams active in the next coming weeks,” he added.

Police are asking anyone who has land in that area to look around the property and to call police if they see anything out of place.

“Our priority is to find Madison Roy-Boudreau, to bring those answers to her family and community,” he said. “This had quite an impact on the community.”
