Council to discuss park tent plan Tuesday

By CityNews Halifax Staff

Regional council will debate a staff report today suggesting four parks in HRM be designated as spaces people can set up tents.

The report recommends the four parks be split up into eight sites, with four tents permitted on each site. That would create 32 spaces for people experiencing homelessness to stay.

“It probably will be a done deal at the end of [Tuesday's meeting],” said Lower Sackville councillor Paul Russell.

But despite that expectation, the plan is not without concern for Russell.

“I've heard from multiple people who say 'great if HRM is going to allow camping in a park, I'll move my RV there and I'll just be there in an HRM park',” Russell explained. “So it's a big concern, and I don't know how we square that.”

Council will debate the report at today's council meeting, scheduled to start at 1 p.m. You can watch the meeting here.
