Annual fall leaf cleanup begins in HRM

The annual fall leaf cleanup begins today in Halifax Regional Municipality.

HRM says over the next few weeks, Haligonians may see temporary “no parking” signs posted in neighbourhoods so crews can collect and remove leaves from streets.

They plan to start clearing fallen leaves in heavily-treed areas of the Halifax peninsula first, and then move on to other areas of the urban core as required.

Home owners are responsible for cleaning up their own private properties.

They can put leaves and other yard waste (with the exception of grass clippings) to the curb on their designated green cart/organics collection day. The waste can be put in the green cart, or in up to 20 large paper bags weighing no more than 55 pounds each per pickup.

“The potential for street flooding increases greatly when catch basins are clogged with debris,” HRM said in a news release.

“Residents are also asked to respect municipal by-laws which prohibit the sweeping or depositing of leaves along the gutter of the street or in the roadway.”
