Emera Oval opens for ice skating

By Meghan Groff

It's time to sharpen your skates.

The Emera Oval has officially opened for the winter season.

Those heading to the largest outdoor, artificially refrigerated ice service east of Quebec City can borrow free equipment, including skates and helmets, along with select adaptive equipment. All they'll need is a valid ID.

CSA-approved multi-impact hockey helmets are mandatory for children 12 and under, and all other skaters are also encouraged to wear one.

There's also an accessible washroom on site, along with on-street accessible parking located on Cogswell Street, and wheelchair access to the ice surface.

And Thursday between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., Haligonians can skate with Santa. There will be holiday music, complimentary candy canes and an opportunity to get a photo with Kris Kringle.

With COVID restrictions lifted, there are no longer capacity restrictions, so no need to reserve a spot in advance, unless you're part of a larger organized group of between 20 and 75 people.
