Storm closures and cancellations: Thursday Mar. 2, 2023

The threat of snow in the Halifax area led to some early closures on Thursday

Here's what's impacted. 

SCHOOLS: 

MSVU closing at 4:30 pm. A decision on reopening will be made Friday morning.

Saint Mary's University will close at 5 pm on Thursday and delay opening until noon on Friday unless conditions require a further delay.

NSCC Metro campuses (Ivany, Aviation, IT and Akerley) will close at 4:30 pm.

The South Shore and Annapolis Valley regional education centres will dismiss 90 minutes early on Thursday before the storm. 

The Girls Conference, previously scheduled for Thursday at Mount Saint Vincent University, has been postponed. The conference will now take place on May 25.

HRCE schools are cancelling extracurriculars, Halifax Regional Arts activities and evening facilities rentals this evening

 

TRANSPORTATION:

Halifax Transit will end service early Thursday night, with no new trips starting after 10 pm. Transit will have a delayed start Friday morning service resumption ramping up at 10 am. 

BUSINESSES:

Irving Shipbuilding has cancelled the Thursday afternoon and Friday back shifts at all locations. An update on Friday's morning shift was to be sent later on Thursday. 

SERVICES:

HRM will be delaying the opening of our offices Friday until 10 am.

Friday's curbside collection of garbage, organics and recyclables is cancelled. For residents who usually have a collection on Friday, services have been rescheduled for Saturday. Residents are reminded that collection can begin as early as 7 am.

The Household Special Waste Depot located at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive will be closed on March 4 but will be open on March 11 from 9 am to 4 pm. For more information, visit halifax.ca/HSWDepot.

Most municipal recreation facilities were closed at 4 pm Thursday. HRM says a decision will be made by 8 am tomorrow regarding whether rentals, facilities and programming activities will continue as scheduled. 

The Public Gardens will be closed Friday morning.

Other HRM facilities that will be closed on Friday include:

  • Materials Recycling Facility at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive in Bayers Lake
  • Composting facilities at 80 Gloria McCluskey Avenue in Burnside and 61 Evergreen Place in Goodwood
  • Rural refuse depots are located at 249 Sibley Road in Middle Musquodoboit and 21611 Highway #7 in Sheet Harbour

The Museum of Natural History Doc Talk cancelled.
