Search continues for Pictou County man at the centre of Emergency Alert

RCMP received a report of a man in distress on Hedgeville Road in Hedgeville just after one o’clock in the afternoon. That call kicked off a series of events that led police to warn residents in River John to shelter in place.

Shortly after 2 p.m., responded officers found a stolen vehicle that they believed was driven by 35-year-old David Tobin-Chisholm in River John. Witnesses say they saw a man walk off into a wooded area and may have had a firearm.

Police then, with the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team and the RCMP Police Dog Service,  secured the immediate area around the vehicle, including a home on Sergeant Lane and a residence in Hedgeville.

That is when RCMP decided to issue an emergency alert for residents in the immediate area to shelter in place.

Police report receiving several sightings of the suspect in the area and as far away as New Glasgow that officers looked into and determined to be unfounded.

Just after 8:30 p.m., police cancelled the emergency alert and told residents they no longer had to shelter in place.

RCMP say Tobin-Chisholm failed to appear in Pictou Provincial Court on April 4, 2023, for unrelated matters, and as a result, a province-wide warrant was issued for his arrest.

The charges Tobin-Chisholm faces, as listed on the warrant, are:

  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose;
  • Engaging in Threatening Conduct;
  • Break and Enter with Intent;
  • Uttering Threats;
  • Mischief;
  • Theft under $5,000;
  • Failure to Comply with Conditions (6 counts)

Tobin-Chisholm remains at large and is described as 5-foot-6-inches tall, approximately 145 pounds. He has a shaved head and hazel eyes.

RCMP say their investigation is ongoing, and additional charges related to yesterday’s incidents in River John are anticipated.

Police are asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of Tobin-Chisholm not to approach him and to contact Pictou County District RCMP at 902-485-4333 or to contact Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers, toll-free, at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or www.crimestoppers.ns.ca, or use the P3 Tips App.
