Halifax-area students stage walkout in support of striking workers

Some Halifax-area high school students staged a walkout on Monday in support of striking school support workers.

The strike started last week after workers with CUPE local 5047 voted to reject a tentative deal with the Halifax Regional Centre for Education.

The walkout by students at Charles P. Allen high on Monday followed similar protests by students at other schools around the area.

School support staff workers are asking for higher wages, rejecting the employer’s offer of a 6.5 per cent increase over three years.

The strike is impacting some of the most vulnerable students, with families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder told to keep them at home while the job action continues.
