Mi’kmaw elder and activist Daniel Paul dies at 84

Nova Scotians are mourning the loss of Daniel Paul, a renowned Mi’kmaw elder, historian, author and activist Daniel Paul. He was 84.

Paul was widely known for his book “We Were Not Savages” which delves into Mi’kmaw history and the impacts of colonialism.

“Dr. Dan Paul taught us all about history, dignity and persistence, I think he has been one of our most impactful citizens,” Halifax mayor Mike Savage wrote. “His voice was never loud but always strong. He made Nova Scotia a better province and I will miss him.”

He was a recurring guest for many years on The Rick Howe Show on CityNews 95.7, bringing awareness of Mi’kmaw issues to listeners, featured a number of times as an advocate for renaming landmarks in Halifax named after founder Edward Cornwallis.

Reports say Paul had been battling cancer since late last year.
