Police say rope incident in Africville Park ‘motivated by hate’

By CityNews Halifax Staff

Halifax Regional Police are investigating a disturbing incident that they are describing as “motivated by hate” in Africville Park.

Yesterday at approximately 12:20 p.m. police received a report of a rope that had been placed in a tree in the North End park.

The rope had been removed prior to officers’ arrival, however after observing photos of the scene prior to its removal and given its location, investigators say it is clear the rope was intended to be a noose.

Investigators, along with members of the Hate Crime Unit of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division, are asking anyone with information about this incident or video from the area, who has not already spoken with police, to call 902-490-5020.

Anonymous tips can be sent to Crime Stoppers by calling toll-free 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submitting a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca or using the P3 Tips App.

Police say more information on hate crime and hate incidents is available on their website.
