It’s back-to-school week in Nova Scotia, which means more vehicles on the streets and kids running around.
Halifax Regional Police (HRP) are hoping for a safe start to the year for all involved as students will begin to hit the roads this week, which means everybody needs to pay more attention.
Constable John Macleod says officers will be keeping a close eye on school zones for the month of September.
“The speed limits in those school zones get reduced to 30 km/h if that zone you are approaching is 50 and you are expecting kids to be present,” said MacLeod, adding that if the speed limit is higher than 50 entering the zone, the limit is reduced to 50 km/h.
Macleod reminds drivers that with more people on the roads, you’ll want to give yourself some extra time to get where you need to go and to keep in mind the slogan “slower is always going to be safer.”
HRP also reminds drivers that if they come across a school bus, they cannot pass in either direction when its lights are flashing.
Police are asking drivers to give themselves extra time to get where they are going now that students are heading to class.
Many Regional Centre for Education in Nova Scotia are welcoming their students back today, except the Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE). The majority of HRCE students will head back to school on Thursday morning.
