The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) has issued a public service announcement as the municipality prepares for Lee’s arrival on the weekend.
Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for HRM and the surrounding area, forecasting winds gusting as high as 110 km/h so city officials are asking people to move patio furniture inside and to remove anything that high winds could pick up and toss around.
Catch basins should be cleared as well, the city says to reduce the risk of flooding as much as possible, and with a storm surge expected, people are being warned to avoid the shoreline and low-lying areas.
Waste collection will go ahead as usual on Friday, but the following closures will be in place on Saturday:
-The mobile Household Special Waste event planned for at the Eastern Shore Community Centre is cancelled and will be rescheduled.
-The permanent Household Special Waste Depot located at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive will be closed.
-The Middle Musquodoboit Rural Refuse Depot located at 249 Sibley Road, Middle Musquodoboit will be closed.
-The Sheet Harbour Rural Refuse Depot located at 21611 Nova Scotia Trunk 7, Sheet Harbour will be closed.
Halifax Transit is expected to operate normally this weekend, although watch for impacts during the storm.
As for Halifax’s unhoused population, provincially-run shelters will open at 6 p.m. Friday at the Captain Spry Community Centre, St. Matthews’ Church in Halifax and Beacon House in Lower Sackville. The HRM says street navigators are out informing people of those options ahead of the storm.
