Islanders spoil the party with win over Halifax

By CityNews Halifax staff

It was an emotional night in Halifax, but the Charlottetown Islanders played spoiler on a night honouring a Mooseheads legend.

The evening started with a ceremony retiring Nathan MacKinnon’s number 22. Former teammates, coaches and friends all wished MacKinnon well, including a message from fellow Cole Harbour native Sidney Crosby.

The ceremony didn’t faze Mooseheads rookie forward Liam Kilfoil, who scored his first QMJHL goal to open the scoring in the first period.

Charlottetown would even the score at one before the end of the first period.

The Islanders would strike in the second period. A second goal from new Charlottetown captain Michael Horth on the powerplay put the Islanders up 2-1.

It would be a tight start to the third period but the Mooseheads poured it on about halfway through the period trying to tie the game. Halifax pushed hard, but the Islanders would find the empty net late in the third to make it 3-1.

Halifax will be back in action on Saturday in Charlottetown. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. and you can hear all the action on CityNews 95.7.
