Council votes in favour of plans for new Bedford library

By Mark Hodgins

Halifax Regional Council has voted unanimously in favour of having staff begin the planning and budgeting process for the library.

The plan would be to build the 21,000-square-foot library within a new ferry terminal planned for Mill Cove, a site that still required approvals from the federal government.

“This location doesn’t pan out we will have to come back to council and find another location,” said Bedford Councillor Tim Outhit. “Let’s keep optimistic that we will have this nice space on the waterfront to share with the ferry terminal.”

The staff report brought forward at council on Tuesday suggested a potential property tax increase at an average of $24 for the 2024/25 year as part of the funding model, but that continues to be part of the planning phase.
