RCMP charge man with murder after incident in Thorburn

RCMP have charged a man with second degree murder following an attempted break-in at a home in Thorburn on Monday.

Mounties said shortly before 9 a.m., officers responded to a report of a man attemping a break-in on Greenwood Street.

The RCMP issued an alert shortly after, warning people in the community of Thorburn of a dangerous man who’d allegedly attacked someone with an axe.

Police said when they entered the suspect’s home, they found a woman suffering from serious injuries. She was transported to hospital by ambulance and later succumbed to her injuries.

At roughly11:25 a.m., RCMP Air Services located the man, who was suffering from serious injuries, in the woods behind Greenwood St. using FLIR technology.

He was safely arrested not too long after and was transported to hospital by ambulance with police escort.

John Douglas Cress, 61, of Thorburn, has been charged with 2nd Degree Murder.

Cress has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Pictou Provincial Court on Wednesday.
