A 59-year-old man has been charged in connection to historical sexual assaults that took place in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) decades ago.

Police said they began an investigation in June after receiving reports of sexual assaults that took place in the late 1980s at an elementary school in Eastern Passage and in the 1990s at a home in Lucasville.

According to police, the two victims were youths at the time and the man involved was in a position of trust for one of the victims.

On Oct. 20, Steve Hutchins turned himself in at the Halifax Regional Police headquarters where he was safely arrested.

He was later released on conditions and has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference.

He is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court next month.
