Maritime Museum of the Atlantic closed after garbage bin fire

A fire inside a garbage container outside the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic kept Halifax Fire crews busy for a while early Friday morning.

HRFE was called to the museum on the Halifax waterfront after a report of a fire, and when they arrived, the found a garbage bin ablaze.

HRFE Deputy Chief Roy Hollett told CityNews Halifax that crews quickly attacked the flames, but the position of the container was a cause for concern for responding crews

“Where the garbage can was situated, it was under the overhang,” said Hollett, “Crews made entry into the building, looking for extension checks and determined there was no extension into the building.”

Hollett says there was no structural damage to the interior of the building, but some smoke did make its way inside.  Hollett says firefighters did check on the welfare of Merlin the Macaw, the parrot that lives in the museum, and the popular figure was OK.

Friday morning, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic took to social media to inform residents that the facility would be closed until Tuesday.
