Wind warning issued for all of Nova Scotia in advance of Monday’s storm

Monday promises to be a windy day in HRM and across Nova Scotia.

Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for the entirety of the province, along with Prince Edward Island and the majority of New Brunswick, as a strong December storm passes through the region.

For HRM, the national forecaster said the municipality can expect winds gusting from 80-100 km/h beginning Monday afternoon and lasting through the evening hours.

In anticipation of the storm, Nova Scotia Power (NSP) says it will open its Emergency Operations Centre at 9 a.m.

“We will be positioning crews across the province so they are ready to respond as soon as it is safe to do so,” said Drover. “High winds can cause trees to come into contact with power lines causing power outages and can also slow restoration efforts, as crews must stand down when winds reach 80km an hour, until it’s safe to go up in the buckets,” said Drover

NSP said that customers can prepared too, by securing items outside their homes and having an emergency kit handy. Environment Canada says wind gusts of this strength can cause damage to buildings, like roof shingles and windows, and storms like this have resulted in power interruptions in the past.
