N.S. advocate issues petition to regulate hard-to-get Ozempic drug

By Madison Irvine

A global Ozempic shortage has inspired a Nova Scotia man to call for the government to regulate the drug.

The type-2 diabetes drug has become popular due to its weight-loss benefits, which is ultimately causing a shortage due to its high demand.

Andrew Konecny, an IT professional living with type-2 diabetes says he is most concerned about those people living with diabetes who cannot afford alternatives.

“I’m really concerned about vulnerable people,” he tells CityNews Halifax. “People, if there is an alternative, who can afford out of pocket to pay for a drug because there is such a variance in insurance coverage across this country.”

Konecny has started an e-petition for the federal and provincial governments to regulate the drug and ensure those who need it most, get it first.

With over 100,000 Nova Scotians living with type-2 diabetes, the hope is the supply will pick back up and help those who need it first.
