Firefighters respond to two encampment fires Monday in Halifax area

The investigation is ongoing into two separate encampment fires in the Halifax Regional Municipality on Monday.

At about 6:30 a.m. Monday, one person sustained minor injuries after a fire at the tent encampment at Grand Parade in downtown Halifax.

Assistant Chief of Operations Jim Stymiest told CityNews that crews were called to the scene to find a propane appliance and two lawn chairs on fire.  Crews also discovered that flames damaged two propane tanks and one tent,

One person at the site received some minor burns to their hands and was treated by firefighters.

Then at about 11:30 a.m., HRFE was called to a fire at a shed being used as a shelter along Hwy. 7 in the Westphal area. Assistant Chief Dave Meldrum said the fire was quickly extinguished and there were no injuries.

Both fires are under investigation.
