HRM plans for 6.3 per cent property tax increase

It looks like the municipality is planning for a 6.3 per cent increase to property taxes.

According to staff, that works out to around $185 in additional charges to the average residential property tax bill.

Discussion on that increase is continuing but for now the jump aims to bring in more funding for firefighters and police, among other things. Some councillors say the jump comes after years of undercharging on taxes.

Also included in the discussions is a plan to raise Halifax Transit fares this year by 25 cents, up to $3 for adults.

The municipal budget will be passed on Apr. 23.
