NSTU president Ryan Lutes says the strike vote wasn’t taken lightly but was necessary because the provincial government isn’t addressing crucial issues facing teachers.
The Nova Scotia Teachers Union represents nearly 10,000 public school teachers and specialists and says today’s strike vote comes after 10 months of contract negotiations with the province.
Members of the Halifax local of the NSTU rallied in Lower Sackville Wednesday night, aiming to draw attention to several issues, including rising school violence.
Last month, the union released a survey that found that 84 percent of teachers had considered leaving the profession.
The NDP is throwing its support behind the union and is calling on the Houston government to support teachers.
Last month, the education minister said she remains hopeful a deal with teachers can be reached without a strike.
