21 arrested after downtown Halifax protest

Halifax Regional Police arrested 21 people for refusing to leave the roadway at a demonstration in downtown Halifax Monday morning.

According to police, the protests started at around 7:10 a.m. and held up traffic in the Hollis St and Terminal Rd area.

Those arrested now face one count each of obstruction, and some are facing additional charges under the Motor Vehicle Act for failing to obey the direction of a peace officer and failing to use the sidewalk. Once the protest site was cleared, several protestors made their way to the police headquarters on Gottingen St and continued their demonstration.

HRP says it respects the right to peacefully protest and will continue to work to ensure the public’s safety.
