Ecology Action Centre happy with decision not to introduce a spring bear hunt in Nova Scotia

A local environmental group is applauding the province’s decision to not allow a spring bear hunt.

The decision comes after an online survey over more than 17 thousand residents showed 51 percent were opposed to a bear hunt while 47 per cent were in favour and two per cent were neutral.

Senior Wilderness Coordinator with the Ecology Action Centre Raymond Plourde said that he was happy with the province’s decision.

“At least 10, if not 11 or 12 different governments over the decades, of all political stripes have been asked or lobbied for this, have duly considered this and have said no.” Plourde said.

Nova Scotia’s Safari Club chapter released a statement on the decision to not add the hunting season, saying it is deeply disappointed with the province’s decision.

The organization said this hunt would have been an opportunity for many Nova Scotians to “harvest organic, healthy meat at a time of year when many hunter’s freezers go empty.”
