Mooseheads’ Mathieu Cataford a finalist for QMJHL MVP

The Halifax Mooseheads have a skater nominated for QMJHL most valuable player for the second year in a row.

Forward Mathieu Cataford is up for the Michel-Brière Trophy, awarded to the regular season’s MVP.

Cataford finished third in league scoring with 40 goals and 50 assists, and ended the season with a 58.1 per cent faceoff success rate.

“Cataford was able to make up for the long-term absence of Jordan Dumais by helping the Mooseheads finish second in the Eastern Conference,” said a news release from the QMJHL.

Halifax could have skaters named MVP in back-to-back seasons as Dumais won the award last year.

Baie-Comeau’s Justin Gill and Rouyn-Noranda’s Antonin Verreault are also nominated.

Halifax goaltender Mathis Rousseau was a finalist for the inaugural Patrick Roy Trophy for best goalie, but the league announced Thursday the winner was the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies’ William Rousseau.

Mathis set a Mooseheads franchise record with a league-best .925 save percentage. He also represented Team Canada at the 2024 World Junior Hockey Championship.
