Police watchdog charges Halifax police officer with assault

By CityNews Halifax Staff

A Halifax Regional Police officer has been charged with assault by the province’s police watchdog agency.

In a release, Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) announced it found probable grounds to believe that an off-duty Halifax Regional Police officer committed a criminal offence.

On October 26, 2023, HRP contacted the SiRT after a female alleged they had been assaulted by one of their officers.

SiRT began an investigation into the matter that day and as a result, Constable Robert Baird was charged yesterday with committing an assault against a female known to him between January 1, 2020, and September 1, 2021.

According to SiRT’s report, the female and three civilian witnesses were interviewed during the investigation.

Baird is scheduled to appear in Nova Scotia provincial court on May 14.

SiRT investigates all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest connected to the actions of police in Nova Scotia.
