After recent incidents of violence in schools, the province’s New Democrats want Premier Tim Houston to step up.

Nova Scotia’s NDPs released a statement today calling on the Houston government to take action after a series of threats forced several HRM schools to close early.

The NDP leader says she’s aware that the Education Minister a report on her desk about a violent assault involving a student at C.P. Allen High School from March 2023.

A 15-year-old student was charged with two counts of attempted murder after two staff members were stabbed in the incident.

Claudia Chender says that report should be made public so that families and school communities can have insight into how the incident happened, and what’s being done to make schools safer for all.

The Nova Scotia Teachers Union previously reported that last year, 92 per cent of teachers surveyed said they had witnessed violence first-hand at school.

Chender adds “it’s time for the Minister to show Nova Scotians what’s being done to ensure events like this never happen again.”
