Halifax local qualifies for third Olympics

A Halifax local and bronze medal winner is heading to the 2024 Paris Olympics in just over two months.

Sydney Pickrem, 27, is one of many swimmers competing in the upcoming games, alongside Summer McIntosh, Penny Oleksiak and other medialist hopefuls.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be Pickrem’s third time qualifying since her first games in Rio 2016.

On May 19, the Canadian Olympic swimming team selected athletes based on their performances at the 2024 Olympic & Paralympic Swimming Trials that took place May 13 to 19.

To qualify, swimmers needed to have the Olympic Qualifying Time in that event and finish top two in the trials.

“Canada has also qualified entries in all seven relay events, so there are several athletes who will be fulfilling their Olympic dreams as members of those squads,” a press release from Swimming Canada reads.

Pickrem is local to Halifax but was born in Florida. Her Team Canada bio says her family hails from the east coast.

She had a bronze medal finish in the women’s 4x1000m medley relay at Tokyo 2020, swimming breaststroke in both heats and the final.

Individually she was a finalist in the 200m IM, finishing sixth for the second time.
