Police remind people not to leave pets in hot vehicles

By CityNews Halifax Staff

With the weather starting to feel a little more like summer, regional police want to remind residents not to leave their pets in parked vehicles.

According to officials, even with windows open, parked vehicles can quickly start to feel like a furnace which could be potentially fatal for pets inside.

Police said if you are not able to leave your furry friends at home, there are alternatives to leaving them in the vehicle.

They include using a drive-thru and curbside pickup, bringing a friend to watch your pet and considering going to pet-friendly shops.

A summary offence ticket for leaving an animal unattended in a motor vehicle in conditions that could cause distress carries a fine of $697.50.

Anyone who sees a pet in immediate distress is asked to contact HRP and take directions from the call taker.
